8th Grade Team

Yamilka Roque, 8th grade teacher

Mika Roque joined the American Dream Charter School in 2017 and has extensive experience working with children in an academic setting. Born and raised in mostly the Bronx, New York, Mika is the first person in her family to have attended and graduated from college in May 2015. With a BA in English from Dickinson College, Mika discovered her passion for teaching when she was hired as a teaching fellow in 2014 with Breakthrough Collaborative in New York. Teaching a 6-week long writing course to rising 9th graders who graduated from public middle schools all over New York City, Mika realized that teaching in her home city was a responsibility that she has to herself and to the children of New York City who are not provided with the necessary resources to be college-ready and attend great colleges. In 2015, Mika worked as a Blue Engine Teaching Assistant at the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation in the Bronx. Later on in 2016, she went on to teach AP English Language Arts and Composition to 11th-grade students at Uncommon Collegiate Charter High School in Brooklyn. Having attended ten schools in the Bronx, Mika is excited and proud to return to her roots in the Bronx and strive to provide students with an excellent and culturally relevant education that pushes them to their fullest potential. On her free time Mika blogs about life and travel, and is a fan of Issa Rae, she roots for everybody black.
